Starting the action for the 2019 portion of the season, the Decorah wrestling team took the mats Thursday night at home. The Vikes kept the action going with a dual at Caledonia Friday night and then competed in the Flanagan Invite at Crestwood Saturday.

First duals

It was a great night Thursday with the Vikings winning both duals. Decorah took care of Waukon, 57-18, and bested Sparta (Wis.), 37-30.

Battling the Indians, the Vikes won six matches and received four forfeits. Daniel Schwartzhoff got things going at 285 pounds with a fall in 1:12 over Daniel Cowell. At 106 pounds, Austin Wilkins continued things with a fall in 31 seconds. At 132 pounds, Class 3A No. 9 Jackson Rolfs picked up Decorah’s third fall of the night in 1:26 over Owen Frieden. Picking up the 4-1 decision at 138 pounds was Mason Olsgard over Tyler Block. It took 1:04 for Brendan Lovstuen to pin Carter Nolting at 152 pounds. Competing at 160 pounds, Mikel Fullhart threw Nathan Johnson in 52 seconds. With forfeits were Elijah Mitchell (170), Dawson Palmer (182), Andy Murphy (195) and Caden Keck (220).

Eight Vikings picked up victories against Sparta. Getting things started at 113 pounds was Jacob Voigt who pinned Jonathan Cruz-Cano to the mat in 35 seconds. Picking up his second win of the night, Rolfs continued things with a 6-3 decision over Thomas Treu at 138 pounds. At 152 pounds, B. Lovstuen surpassed Tye Klass with an 8-3 decision for the win. Mitchell (170) held on for a 6-5 decision over Luke Wendorf and Palmer threw Marcus Cox in 3:53 for the win at 182 pounds. Earning an 8-0 major decision victory at 195 pounds was Andy Murphy over Madden Connelly. The night ended with Wilkins throwing Luis Cruz-Cano in 36 seconds at 106 pounds. Receiving the lone forfeit for Decorah was Mason Olsgard at 145 pounds.

“It was enjoyable to pick up two dual wins in front of the home crowd, especially the exciting one with Sparta.  In the Sparta dual it was great to have some different faces come up big for us like Jacob Voigt starting the dual off for us with a big fall,” said Coach Jeff Freidhof.

At Caledonia

Friday night, Decorah ventured out of state to take on Caledonia and La Crescent (Minn.) in Caledonia, coming home 1-1 for the evening in dual action. The Vikings topped La Crescent, 48-18, and fell to the host, Caledonia, 61-15.

Decorah stumbled to Caledonia-Houston, picking up three wins. J. Rolfs (132) needed just 1:06 to throw Eric Mauss for his second pin of the night. At 195 pounds, Andy Murphy collected an 8-1 decision over Owen Blocker. Mason Olsgard received the Vikings’ lone forfeit for the final points of the night.

Aiding in the win over La Crescent were eight Viking victories. Austin Wilkins set the tone of Decorah’s match with a fall in 55 seconds over Bryce Duffy at 113 pounds. J. Rolfs earned the second pin of the match at 132 pounds. The sophomore, ranked No. 9 in Class 2A threw Dominic Foster in 1:47. Mason Olsgard needed 1:27 to pin Jack Kreutzman at 145 pounds. Brendan Lovstuen (152 pounds) threw Dawson Colbert in 1:20. Keeping the winning streak going at 160 pounds was Garrett Lovstuen, who pinned Dane McCormick in 1:28. Elijah Mitchell won by fall in 1:06 over Dylan Schultz at 170 pounds.

With forfeits were Kyzer Engen (138) and Daniel Schwartzhoff (285).

“We were not able to match Caledonia’s physical style or capitalize when we had opportunities. It was good that we were able to turn around quickly after the Caledonia loss and still take care of business against La Crescent,” said Freidhof.
