It was a total team effort Tuesday night as the Decorah volleyball team (4-2, 1-0 NEIC) defeated Waukon (3-1, 0-1 NEIC) on the road, 3-0. Set scores were 25-17, 25-13 and 25-18.

The Vikes led start to finish in set one to win 25-17. In the second set, Decorah trailed 5-3 early when Mara Holland stepped up to the service line to take the score to 14-6 in favor of the Vikings. Decorah eventually collected the victory 25-13. The Red and Blue settled into a rhythm in set three to win 25-18.

“We played really well at times and then we also took some breaks. I know we can be a more consistent team, but I believe we will get there,” said Coach Gina Holthaus. “Our setters did a great job of distributing the ball and all hitters swung well.”

Holland served 19-for-19 with two aces, had 16 assists and six digs. The senior trio of Abby Milburn, Avery Shelton and Annika Franzen each contributed six kills apiece. Shelton also had 10 digs, while Milburn garnered six. Giving a solid defensive performance at the net with seven solo blocks was Emma Nierengarten.

The Vikes are back on the road next week as they pay Charles City a visit Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 7:15 p.m.
