After a hard-fought contest to start the season, the Decorah softball team (1-1, 1-1 NEIC) responded with a dominating performance shutting out Waverly-Shell Rock (1-2, 1-2 NEIC) Wednesday, 14-0, in their home opener.

Decorah plated runs in each of the four innings played with two in each the first and second. The third frame saw batter-after-batter reach base with seven runs scoring in the frame. The Vikings finished the game in the fourth with three additional tallies.

Avery Shelton twirled a solid game with six strikeouts while walking two batters and allowing just two hits.

In the batter’s box, Shelton helped her own cause with a three-run home run. Cora Syverson also launched the ball over the fence for three RBIs. The other four Vikings collecting hits were Ella Kittelson, Ellie Luzum, Isabel Ihde and Abigail Milburn.
