Following Saturday’s regional meet at Linn-Mar, the Decorah swim and dive team will have athletes competing in seven of the 12 events at state event slated for this weekend in Marshalltown.

“The girls had an outstanding regional meet where we qualified seven events for state next weekend,” praised Coach Allie Bachelder. “We had nearly all personal best times. I couldn’t be more proud of this team.”

The Vikings posted a sixth-place overall finish, totaling 199 points as Iowa City West captured the team title with 399 points.

Of the six regional meets across the state, the top finisher in each event automatically qualifies for the state meet, along with individuals who achieved the standard time during the season. To fill the 32-team relay events or individual fields, the next fastest times from the regionals punched tickets to state.

Four individual events will compete at state, including Jessica Ling in the 1-meter diving competition. The senior qualified with a score of 345.90 following Thursday’s regional diving competition.

Emma Bachelder will compete individually in the 50 free and the 100 breast. The junior posted the required standard times in the two individual events to earn her the opportunity to compete at state. She will also anchor the 200 free and 400 free relays.

Freshman Margaret Rhodes rode the waves to a ninth place finish in 5:31.00 in the 500 free to receive an at-large bid for state.

All three Viking relays will be competing in the state waters. The 200 medley quartet of Rhodes, Ella Hermeier, Emily Voyna and Meridian Snitker stopped the clock at 1:56.25, in eighth place Saturday to move on.

Joining Bachelder on the 200 free relay will be Emily Voyna, Kiana Folkedahl and Meridian Snitker, after the quarter posted a time of 1:43.49 to finish sixth at regionals. The 400 free relay, comprised of Voyna, Folkedahl, Rhodes and Bachelder touched the wall in 3:45.60 in fourth place to advance to state.

With their performances at the regional meet, the Decorah relay teams earned the following tentative seeds: 200-yard medley relay, 29th; 200-yard freestyle relay, 24th; and 400-yard freestyle relay, 16th. Bachelder is seeded 12th in the 50-yard freestyle and 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Rhodes enters with the 30th seed in the 500-yard freestyle. Ling enters the diving competition seeded 30th. Since there are no classes in Iowa high school swimming, the Vikings will compete against schools of all sizes from across the state.

There are eight additional qualifiers for the state meet this year, moving from 24 to 32 total competitors in each event. The added numbers have forced the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union to three sessions to the State Swimming & Diving Meet. The preliminary swimming events will take place Friday, Nov. 2, at 5:30 p.m. The State Diving Meet will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3. The State Swimming Finals, including all state-qualifying relay events will be held at 4 p.m.
