The Decorah volleyball team (1-0, 0-0 NEIC) opened the season strong Tuesday night, defeating St. Ansgar (0-1) 3-2 on the road.
Set scores were 25-12, 24-26, 21-25, 25-19, 15-13.
“It was an exciting first match of the season. Match of service runs at times, which would be pretty typical for early season play,” said Coach Dale Wilharm. “We played really well the first set and then had some inconsistent play in sets two and three, but to the girls’ credit, they got this turned around in set four and then finished with an exciting set five for the 3-2 win.”
Decorah produced 42 kills on 98 attack attempts with a .296 kill efficiency. At the service line, they were 100-for-110 with seven aces. The Vikings had 38 assists (7.6 per set), 36 digs (7.2 per set) and had 14 total blocks (2.8 per set).
Individually, Melanie Gossman had seven kills, eight digs and served 17-for-17. Teeya Hovden provided 15 assists and served 30-for-31. Kassie Hoyme had 12 kills and produced a .524 efficiency. Kaitlyn Kregel also had 12 kills for a .318 kill efficiency. Riley Hubka served 14-for-14 with eight digs.

The Vikings are off until Tuesday, Sept. 9, when they go to Waukon for the first NEIC meet of the season.
