The dual season came to an end for the South Winn wrestling team Tuesday night.

The Warriors, ranked No. 24 in the final dual rankings compiled by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association and Iowa High School Athletic Association, faced No. 10 West Hancock in the regional dual semifinals hosted by Lake Mills. The Warriors fell to West Hancock, 43-23.

In the other semifinal, No. 5 Lake Mills defeated No. 38 Wapsie Valley, 67-10. In the final, Lake Mills knocked off West Hancock, 55-18, to earn a bid to the team dual Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Des Moines.

For the Warriors, five grapplers got wins. At 113 pounds, Ethan Maldonado gave South Winn the early lead with a 15-0 tech fall over Derek Oberhelman in 4:00. Philip French added six points to the Warrior team tally with a fall in 56 seconds over Isaac Madson. The Warriors grabbed a 17-0 lead with Kaden Bullerman’s throw of Westin Schmid in 2:42 at 126 points. West Hancock put its first points on the board by a decision at 132 and 138 pounds.

At 145 pounds, Lane Quandahl survived a 2-0 decision over Irvin Gomez, allowing the Warriors to lead, 20-10. South Winn gave up a forfeit at 152 pounds before Zach Taylor (160) secured a 6-3 decision over Bryer Subject for a 23-16 lead. That would be the end of the scoring for the Red and Gray as West Hancock claimed the final five matches.

Eight Warriors will compete at the district meet Saturday, Feb. 15, at 12 p.m. at Starmont, with the right to go to state on the line.
