The Northeast Iowa Rugby Club will be taking part in the first annual Northeast Iowa Rugby Invitational, planned for Saturday, May 10, at Pleasant Valley Sports Club, located south of Clermont.
This is a “tens” format rugby tournament. Traditionally, rugby is played with 15 players. Each team at the invite will field 10 players. This version of the game incorporates full contact, but with fewer players on the pitch, there is more space for the players to run, making the pace of the game slightly faster.
Currently, the competition this year is comprised of the Northeast Iowa Barbarians, River City Rugby (Mason City), Rochester Minnesota Rugby and the Grinnell Griffins Rugby. Play begins at 10 a.m. There is no admission fee.
Rugby is similar to American football but without pads and interruptions. It is also faster and features higher scoring.
Currently, the 2014 spring schedule is: April 5 at River City (Mason City); April 12 at Rugby Daze (Luther); May 3 at All Iowa (Iowa Falls); May 10 at NEIA 10’s (Clermont); and June 21 at Boksprings 10’s (Faribault).
