The Decorah High School Viking Café is open noon to 1 p.m. Thursday through May 3. Allie Hafner, Steven Baldridge and Maddy McEnaney will be serving Bacon Avocado Grilled Cheese, Tomato Basil Soup, and Chocolate Trifle at next week's March 22 Viking Café.
The Viking Cafe made its debut at Decorah High School in the spring of 2013. The cafe is part of the practical learning experience in the Foods II class at Decorah High School as well as part of the hospitality class that works at menu planning, promotion, serving and cost analysis.
The manager of the restaurant and the instructor for the course, Dana Einck, has been certified for the "Serv-Safe" program, through the National Restaurant Association. Students in the Foods II class are also part of the "Pro-Start" curriculum offered through the National Restaurant Association and, as such, can test to receive a certificate from that organization. The Iowa Department of Inspections and appeals has also visited the site and provided its stamp of approval for restaurant operations.
The students in Dana Einck’s Hospitality class are in charge of the business aspect of the Viking Café, located on the east side of Decorah High School.
The Viking Café seats 24 clients and the public is invited to dine at the restaurant. Because of limited seating, those interested should call the Decorah High School office at 382-3643 for reservations. Menus will be posted to the Decorah High School website under Viking Cafe throughout the semester. The cost of the meal is currently $7 but may change; the website will post any price changes.
