The Class 1A No. 4 Warriors are another step closer to making their second consecutive trip to the state baseball tournament at Principal Park Saturday night. The South Winn baseball team (24-1) defeated MFL MarMac (12-6) 15-0 in four innings to win their fifth district title in the 11 years.

With the win, South Winn looks to avenge their only loss of the year when they take on Saint Ansgar (15-3) Tuesday, July 21, at 7 p.m. at Cresco. The winner will advance to the state tournament.

In the district final win, the Warriors got off to a fast start, sitting the Bulldog batters down in order. The Warrior offense struck early and often in the district final against the Bulldogs. Noah Tieskoetter set the tone with a leadoff double in the bottom of the first to start a three-run inning. A hit to centerfield by Jaron Todd sent Tieskoetter across home plate before a walk issued to Cael Kuboushek loaded the bases. The Warriors would go on to score two more runs before ending the inning.

The big blow came in the second inning highlighted by a Jaron Todd three-run bomb, which concluded with seven Warrior runs for a 10-0 lead. SW squeezed out two more runs in the third frame before putting the game to rest in the fourth on the 15-run mercy rule.

South Winn was efficient on the mound and defensively with Ethan Luzum throwing three strong innings in the start and the defense committing zero errors over the four innings. Pitching in relief was Todd.

The Warriors had nine hits and used four walks and seven stolen bases. Todd had two hits, including a home run to go with his four RBI. Seth Greve was 3-for-3 with all double for a trio of RBI. Others having multi-hit games were Tieskoetter, Kuboushek, Kody Kleve, Luzum and Herold.

“Getting the momentum going early offensively was key in this game. It allowed us to keep our pitch counts down having everybody available for the substate game on Tuesday,” said Coach Alex Smith.
